ISPCA Inspector Kevin McGinley recently responded to a call from a resident of village of Kerrykeel Co. Donegal regarding a fox which was caught in a snare. On arrival Inspector McGinley found the fox with the snare caught around its neck. The distressed animal was struggling frantically in an effort to release itself.
Inspector McGinley freed the fox and found that it was thankfully unharmed so it was released back into the wild. While the ISPCA has grave concerns regarding the suffering caused by snares and their indiscriminate nature, they are currently an approved trap and quite legal if used correctly.
Inspector McGinley commented “If anybody is employing snares we would ask that they check them as frequently as possible to minimise any suffering caused”.
