The Westmeath Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (W.S.P.C.A ) is a non-profit animal welfare organisation affiliated to the ISPCA. It is run by a small but dedicated group of volunteers who rely financially on the generosity of local sponsors and the general public in order to survive.
The WSPCA was established nearly 50 years ago to help prevent cruelty to animals both wild and domestic. This is still our principal aim and through effort and hard work by our volunteers we are proud to currently provide a range of services that is funded by annual donations, grants, sponsorship and fundraising.
We currently run a purpose built cat shelter that continually re-homes many stray and unwanted cats every year. Every cat that comes into our shelter is fed, wormed and given appropriate veterinary care when needed.
We retain the services of a cruelty inspector who not only provides daily advice and information to the general public but who also is responsible for following up cases of suspected cruelty through accidents, abandonment or mistreatment.
Finally we also strongly promote good spaying and neutering policies to reduce the amount of unwanted animals in Westmeath. We do provide financial assistance in certain cases to support this cause.
