Waterford SPCA was founded in 1870. Its aim was to promote animal welfare in Waterford city and county and after nearly a century and a half this still remains its goal. It is affiliated to the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It is a registered charity, number 743, since September 1921.
We opened a charity shop in 2002 to help raise funds. In 2003 we opened an office so that people with concerns about animal neglect or animals in need of assistance, could access help more easily. Previously the Society was run from voluntee’s homes but the need for a more structured service was identified. All premises are rented but it is a strongly held wish for Waterford SPCA to own its own premises, if and when finances permit.
At present we have a Welfare Officer who investigates reports of cruelty and neglect. We strongly encourage the neutering of pets, believing that a great deal of welfare problems amongst companion animals have their root in the breeding of unwanted animals. We run a neutering scheme whereby we contribute to the cost of neutering of pets for people on a wide range of social welfare benefits. Visits to schools, clubs, active retirement groups and various community organisations are arranged on request.
Waterford SPCA is funded by donations by the public and the proceeds of fundraising events throughout the year, such as raffles, street collections, supermarket bag packs, jumble sales, auctions, sponsored walks etc. The charity shop at Summerland Square beside our office (beside Mercy School), sells goods donated by the public and is run entirely by volunteers.
Waterford SPCA wishes to acknowledge with thanks, the contribution of €18,000 by the Department of Agriculture in 2008, to its running costs.
