Law
Limerick Animal Welfare was formed in the late 1980's by a group of very active people dedicated to the welfare of animals. Our aims are to care for neglected, stray animals.
You will find such stray animals all over the country; the problem is not confined to Limerick, and it is not just stray dogs - there are stray and unwanted cats and goats in uncounted numbers all over the country. Think of the misery and suffering endured by these poor, uncomplaining creatures.

The Dog Pound

Spaniel
In the case of dogs, the solution adopted in virtually all large towns and cities is to round up the strays and transport them to the pound, where they are kept for a few days before being destroyed. Some pounds re-home a small number of dogs, but the overwhelming majority, many of them healthy, friendly dogs, are destroyed.
Our Alternative: We take in neglected dogs and cats and look after them, either in kennels or in our own homes, until we can find a good permanent home for them.
Over the years, we have managed to find homes for hundreds of these unfortunate animals. Limerick Animal Welfare does not destroy animals unless they are seriously unhealthy or in some way unfit for re-homing (such as being dangerous to children).

Caring for animals costs considerably more than destroying them. There are vet bills for injections and neutering (in the case of females), food bills and kennelling costs - it all mounts up to a considerable sum of money which we must find by our fundraising activities. We have virtually no administration costs; we want to spend all the money we raise on caring for animals. We very strongly advocate the neutering of female cats and dogs not intended for breeding by registered breeders. We see this as the only long-term solution to the problem (and suffering) of countless unwanted animals (see article on neutering).
Limerick Animal Welfare is fully affiliated to the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) and we would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank the ISPCA for the valuable assistance it gives in the form of grants.

Ducklings
Animals can give so much back to us in companionship and affection. The least we can do is to show we care. Limerick Animal Welfare care for unwanted and neglected animals. We care for them in our own homes, though we now also have specially constructed dog and cat kennelling. Re-homing of cats and dogs forms the major part of our work. Our policy is to avoid destroying healthy animals unless they are clearly unhomeable for some reason. We are currently homing approximately 180 dogs and 105 cats per year. We neuter all animals we re-home (except for kittens and puppies which are too young). We provide a subsidised neutering service for those who cannot afford the full cost.
