International Standing

The ISPCA was founded in 1949 when all of the various individual County Societies came together as a unit. The ISPCA currently has twenty three Member Societies. We were granted Charitable Status by the Revenue Commissioners in 1969, which means that we are not liable for inheritance tax or any tax on donations given to the ISPCA, either by corporate companies or individuals.

We are recognised as the National Animal Welfare Organisation in this country by both the Eurogroup for Animals in Brussels, the World Society for the Protection of Animals and by our sister organisations in the UK and on the continent.

The ISPCA has very close relationships with the RSPCA in England & Wales, the Scottish SPCA and the USPCA in Ulster. Inspectors from all of these organisations work very closely on matters that relate to the transportation of animals between the various jurisdictions.

The ISPCA currently holds observer status with Eurogroup for Animals and is represented by the General Manager, Mark Beazley, at the yearly AGM and bi-annual campaign meetings.
Eurogroup for Animals campaigns on a European wide basis for improvements in standards of animal welfare throughout the member states of the EU and lobbies through Eurogroup for improvements in the conditions for animals at European level.
One of the biggest challenges for Eurogroup will be trying to include, within the EU, over the coming years, Eastern European and Mediterranean countries who have recently gained membership of the EU but whose current standards in relation to animal welfare are not as advanced as those of the current member states.

The ISPCA in conjunction with other organisations in Europe continues to lobby for a whole range of improvements for animals within the EU including transportation, conditions for laying hens, the responsibility of the retail industry with regards to animal welfare and animals used for production and experimentation.
